New Jersey Auto Insurance
"Being insured is the law in New Jersey"
Consumers have questions and so did we...
• What are the types of insurance coverage and what are the amounts required for the state of New Jersey.
• What does the law say pertaining to minimum insurance coverage in New Jersey?
New Jersey has strict mandatory policies about vehicle registration, insurance coverage minimums, and financial responsibilities pertaining to every vehicle owned, operated, or parked on its roadways. In New Jersey, you can obtain your learner’s permit at sixteen and your restricted license at seventeen, with a full license at eighteen.
To adhere to New Jersey's auto insurance rules, you must...
In New Jersey, you must maintain a current insurance policy with a registered insurance company or broker carrying the minimum insurance requirements or greater. There are many different types of insurance, at competitive rates, so shop around for the best price. Be aware that once insured, if you miss a payment on your policy, your insurance could be cancelled, without notice.
1. New Jersey requires each driver to carry third party liability insurance, also called PLPD, accidental benefits coverage, and uninsured and unidentified driver’s coverage, which insures you, in case you injure someone, cause a death, or damage someone’s property in a motor vehicle accident.
In New Jersey, you must have third party liability insurance for bodily injury with each person allowed $15,000.00, up to maximum of $30,000.00, as well as an additional $5,000.00 for property damages. If there are more than two people injured, whoever files first gets the settlement.
2. In New Jersey, you must carry your driver’s license and proof of insurance, which has not expired, in your motor vehicle. If you driver’s license has been suspended, or your insurance has expired, your vehicle could be towed to the compound by the police. You driver’s license can also be suspended if you owe back child support.
Important facts about auto coverage in New Jersey:
• Your driver’s license can be suspended, if you are caught driving without adequate insurance, with too many fines, or driving while under the influence of alcohol or refusing to take a blood-alcohol test, and leaving the scene of an accident or failing to file an accident report. Seat belts are mandatory in New Jersey.
• You are required to change your driver’s license, if you move, within seven days.
• Your insurance agent has access to your driving record to check for fines, suspensions, and accidents that can cause your policy to increase or be cancelled.
• If you are in an accident, and do not have the minimum insurance, you are financially responsible for all injury and damage settlements awarded by the courts.

Question: Can anyone give examples of how much their auto insurance went up in New Jersey (or another state) after a DWI I recently received a DWI conviction in S. Jersey (my first offense) and was wondering how much local insurance companies will raise my rate? If anyone has experienced this I'd really appreciate knowing how much their rates rose. Also, is there any certain companies that give better rates to those who have DWI convictions? I appreciate any help.
Thanks!
Answer: In NJ a DWI is 9 insurance points & when I was there, points were about $100 per point per year. I'm sure it is more now. When your insurance company finds out (if it is a company other than progressive or assigned risk), & they will find out, they will nonrenew you (since insurance companies can do this once your insurance points are 9 or more). The best person to ask is your insurance agent. Ask them the surcharge per insurance point. You will either have to go to the assigned risk pool or Progressive. I would suggest you go to Progressive because in the assigned risk pool, you get assigned to a company at random (well not really random, there is a formula the state uses but you never know who you will get) & it may be a lousy company with lousy customer service.
Good luck to you.
Question: how much will 4 points cost me in auto insurance in New Jersey? I have State Farm Insurance, Comp and Collision, New Vehicle in New Jersey
Answer: take the bus
Question: Which is the cheapest auto insurance company in new jersey?
Answer: New Jersey Manufacturers insurance company in Trenton is the best. Every so often I comparison shop, and NJM is always the best value. Also they pay out a dividend every year.
Question: I Just Passed my Road Test and Got a New Jersey Drivers License But i was given a Provisional Auto License? Question: State of New Jersey Motor Vehicle Violations Surcharge? My wife got a surcharge for $250.00 for next 3 years for not having an insurance card when cop pulled her over. She has the auto insurance but did not have the insurace card with her. Is she still responsible for the surcharge? It seems to be unfair
Answer: Contact your local municipal court or better yet, look in your local phone book for an agent with the PIA logo or perhaps NJAAA (New Jersey Auto Agents Alliance) - you should be able to find a professional insurance agent that will help you find out!
In Texas, we have the same type surcharge but ONLY if you actually paid a ticket for No Insurance. If she didn't pay it you should just be able to show proof of insurance.
Good luck and I hope this helps!
Question: How much do you pay for Insurance in your state? I live in New Jersey and the Insurance for an auto is so high here. I pay $168 a month for a 2003 ford explorer that is loaded. I have no tickets, my record is clean.
I also have lived in Utah and my Insurance was only $50 a month.
Just wondering what everyone pays in different states?
Answer: Typically, insurance rates will vary from State to State and can even vary by ZIPCODE! It also will depend on the type of car/truck, coverages, limits of liability, and driving record. SOme companies run credit scorees and MOST run a motor vehicel report and CLUE (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) report to see about undisclosed accident involvement.
The best thing to do is call a LOCAL independent agent. Don't go across town, or to some other city - look for someone CLOSE. Just look in the phone book for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Choice) logos and you will find a professional licensed agent that will be able to help you solve your insurance problems, and give you rate comparisons of several different companies. You have another source in NJ, the NJ Auto Agents Alliance. These guys SPECIALIZE in auto insurance and it wasn't THAT long ago, auto insurance was almost non-existant at an affordable price for ANYONE - but due to the efforts of the NJAAA, things have changed!
An independent insurance agent will normally have a dozen different companies and if he cannot help you, he should be networked with other local agents that can.
Most of the replies on this site say "go to this on-line carrier or that on-line carrier or that 1-800 number" but I'm sure that when you do, you will find some impersonal computer user with a script to work from and you won't be able to talk with the same person every time you have a problem!
Utah was one of the first States that had an electronic verification data base that would identify uninsured motorists that WORKED and is STILL working! By controlling the uninsured motorists in the State of Utah, they effectively lowered the liability insurance rate for EVERYONE.
New Jersey used to be the WORST State to try to buy insurance in and a lot of folks would go to PA to get it......I think it has changed some but the rates are STILL higher than most other States in the USA!
Good luck, drive RESPONSIBLY and I hope this helps
Question: Florida Auto Insurance? What is the price range for Florida Liability and Full Coverage Insurance?
In New Jersey Liability is around $80.00 a month.
Answer: It depends on other policy details, such as address and driving record. Find an Independent Agent representing lots of companies and price it out.
